Top 10 Things To Do This Summer at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh NC
The North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) is one of my favorite places in Raleigh. Not only do I photograph sessions there fairly often, I walk there, attend concerts and visit the pop up markets. I thought I’d share some of my favorite things to do there as well as some cool activities and events they are having this upcoming Summer. Everything is family friendly so whether you’re a couple, have family visiting town or just want to take your kids outside for a while, NCMA is the place to be.
1. Explore the museum exhibitions and installations
Naturally, the first thing on the list would be to visit the museum’s exhibitions. They have various exhibitions throughout the year and often times will have specific events related to those exhibits. You can find current exhibitions and their related events here.
3. Summer movie series
The Color Purple, Moana and Wonka are just three of the many movies being shown at NCMA this Summer. Bring your biggest blanket, folding chairs (or a few pillows) and snacks to make it a cozy outdoor evening. Don’t forget the bug repellent! Here is the full list of movies being shown for their Outdoor Films this Summer.
2. Enjoy an outdoor concert
The NCMA outdoor concert series is one of my favorite Summer activities. Last year, my sister-in-law and I went to see Jacob Collier and Lawrence. My second show (that I unfortunately had to miss) was Samara Joy. She is back on the list this year and I definitely plan to be at her show! A few other headliners this year are Kirk Franklin and PJ Morton. Check out the full list for the concert series here.
4. Have a picnic
Last year for my brother’s birthday we did something so simple but had the most fun. My family loves being with each other and having a picnic, eating some food and playing games with the kids was ideal. Don’t underestimate an activity where you can just sit under the shade with a speaker, snacks and sunshine. If you’re looking for something a bit more stylish, you can reach out to Southern Picnics and they can set up something a little more romantic if it’s just for you and your partner.
5. Visit the Triangle Pop Up Market
Triangle Pop Up has really taken over the Raleigh scene showcasing some incredibly talented small business owners. Their pop up market at NCMA is one of the most popular and a lot of fun. Don’t be surprised if you see me on your visit as a customer or as a vendor! I may or may not be looking into selling a few prints here this Summer. View the list of events from Triangle Pop Up here to see when they will be at NCMA this Summer.
6. Rent a bike or take a walk through the trails
My nephew loves to rent a bike when we go to the museum. While I’m not much of a rider, I do love to walk the trails. It’s peaceful and you can really log some steps. View the map of the walking trails here.
7. Take A Class or Workshop
Classes that range from Tai Chi and Yoga to Sewing Circles and Basket Weaving, there are plenty of classes and workshop to explore. View the full list of programs here.
8. Take A Guided Tour
I find it exciting to explore on my own but I also know that that means I’m probably missing out on a lot of great information about the museum. So do as I say and not as I do. NCMA has various guided tours that you can sign up for at your convenience here.
9. Send Your Kids To Camp
If you are looking for a different camp experience for your kids this Summer, the museum may be a great solution. Check out their camp and session details here.
10. Become A Volunteer
Last but not least, become a volunteer! You can become a guide for tours, plant, install art and more. View the full volunteer and intern opportunities here.
